The Sunscreen Guide Every Person in Nepal Actually Needs

Sunscreen tends to get pulled out in summer and forgotten the rest of the year. But UV radiation doesn’t take a break, and neither should your SPF.

Here’s why, and what to do about it.

Nepal's Sun Is Stronger Than You Think

UV rays are present year-round, and several factors make sun protection especially important in Nepal:

  • High altitudes mean a thinner atmosphere and stronger UV rays
  • Snow and water reflect radiation right back at your skin
  • Strong sunlight persists even through winter months
  • Outdoor lifestyles mean constant, unavoidable exposure

Whether you’re trekking in the mountains, commuting through Kathmandu, or working outdoors in the Terai, your skin is taking it in every single day. The long-term effects of ignoring this are not pretty: tanning, pigmentation, premature aging, and in serious cases, an increased risk of skin cancer.

Picking the Right Sunscreen

With so many options out there, the label can feel overwhelming. Keep it simple and look for:

  • SPF 30 or higher for adequate daily protection
  • Broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays
  • Water-resistant formula if you sweat or spend time outdoors

For oily or acne-prone skin, a gel-based or lightweight formula will feel far more comfortable and won’t clog your pores.

Applying It Correctly Makes All the Difference

The best sunscreen in the world won’t help if you’re not using it right:

  • Apply 15 to 20 minutes before heading out
  • Use enough to fully cover your face and all exposed skin
  • Reapply every 2 to 3 hours when outdoors
  • Don’t skip your ears, neck, and hands – they catch the most sun and get forgotten most often

A Few Extra Habits Worth Building

Sunscreen works best with a little backup:

  • Wear a hat and sunglasses when you’re outside
  • Avoid direct sun during peak hours between 10 AM and 4 PM
  • Cover up with protective clothing when you can

Consistent sun protection is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do for your skin. The results won’t show up overnight, but ten years from now, your skin will thank you.
