Improving Sexual Health and Wellbeing Among Adolescents in Remote Hills of Nepal


This project focuses on different aspects of sexual health in a community school of remote hills of Gorkha district in western Nepal. Twenty schoolteachers and twenty female community health volunteers (FCHV) will receive intensive and holistic training on different aspects of sexual health, and more than 1,000 adolescent students will receive education on different aspects of sexual health. 

We started Educational Program on Sexual at community schools of Gorkha district from March 2025. The program is entitled “Reaching Out To Adolescents Of Remote Hills Of Western Nepal To Improve Sexual Health And Social Wellbeing”. This program is supported by International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) and International Foundation for Dermatology (IFD). Some of the highlights of the project includes:

Consultative workshop (A part of Sexual Health Educational Program funded by ILDS & IFD) was conducted on (28th June, 2025) with different subject experts to outline sexual health educational module for adolescents. Our team included senior Dermatologists (Prof Dr Shristi Shrestha, Associate Prof. Dr Suchana Marahatta), Psychologists (Ms Sanam Paudel), Public health experts (Dr Prajwal Pyakurel), nursing experts (Ms Sneha Aryal), Medical Officer (Dr Kopila Gyawali) and Program Manager (Mr Narayan K C). We finalized the training manual after one day workshop with subject experts and frequent virtual consultation with school teachers.

Training of Trainers (TOT) program: As a part of Sexual Health Educational program, TOT program was conducted on 18 & 19 September, 2025 at Hotel Miracle, Gorkha. School teachers of 7 community schools of Gorkha district (total 18 teachers), Female Community Health Volunteers (total 7 FCHV) & 3 ward representatives participated in the TOT program. 

The program was inaugurated by Mayor of Gorkha municipality Mr Krishna B Rana by releasing the “Educational Manual” prepared for school children. Special guest, Deputy-mayor Ms Masali Maya Thokkar also encouraged us with her gracious presence in the inauguration ceremony. She also highlighted in her speech that this type of program is the most needed one at Gorkha district. Other guests: School principals, Ward Chair, Ward representatives, President and Vice-president of Federation of Journalists and local intellectuals of Gorkha district also shared that they are always with us for the successful completion of the program. We offered small training kit and token of love containing office carry bag, educational manual, diary, pen and clear file to all the participants. At the end of the program, we handed over educational materials (containing educational manual, diary, pen and clear file) to the school principals to share with each student of grade 8-12 at four target schools, total kits being 719 pieces. We also shared few copies of educational manual to other three schools for library purpose. 

Skin Health for All: Safe skincare and Sexual Health Awareness

In collaboration with Women forum for women, Nepal (WOFOWON) (https://wofowon.org.np/), we had a free consultation for all skin issues and Sexually transmitted diseases for the members of WOFOWON The program was conducted inside the WOFOWON head office, Gongabu, Kathmandu, Nepal on 26th November 2025. WOFOWON is a non-government organization, which is addressing the issues faced by women in entertainment sector of Nepal including commercial sex workers and LGBTQI as well. There are around 865 registered members in WOFOWON. Healthy Skin Hospital & Research Institute team had half day interaction with its members. We discussed on “Skin issues caused by irrational over the counter (OTC) skin products and cosmetics”. We had free skin check-up, addressed Sexually transmitted diseases and related issues. We found that there is need of more interaction and intervention on these issues including psychological support and counselling. 

Informed parents, Confident teens

We had an opportunity to interact with members of “Kalika Women’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited”, Gorkha on “Sexual Health and Wellbeing” on 19th September 2025. We strongly believe that educating parents is equally vital for promoting adolescents’ sexual health. Hence to enhance the effect of school program, we had short interactive and engaging session with the mother group of Gorkha district where we emphasized the critical role of parental support. A total of twenty-two parents actively participated in the session. We shared few booklets (Educational manuals) for their reference and offered them small side bag as a token of love of the program.

The Adolescent Shift: Skin Changes & Emotions in Teens

Our team had one day interactive session on Sexual and reproductive health, skin changes during adolescence and psychological wellbeing with class 8-10 students of Bibhuti Pathasala School, Thali, Bhaktapur on date 28th July, 2025. A total of 45 students and 2 school teachers participated in the program. Our expert team included: Associate Professor Dr Suchana Marahatta (Dermatologist), Ms Sanam Paudel (Senior Psychologist) and Expressive Art Therapist Ms Neetu Agrawal. We counselled them on: 1) Good touch and bad touch 2) Physiological changes in adolescence and the ways to cope with them 3) Skin changes in adolescences and care tips. We strongly felt the need of similar sessions for the adolescent group.
